I Took Defensive Driving but my Insurance Company Won't Give a Discount

If you took a defensive driving course, you may have done so with the idea that you were going to save big money on your insurance premiums. After all, wouldn't any insurance company love to have a policy holder who's dedicated to driving safely? Unfortunately, you may have found that your insurance company wasn't interested in giving you a discount for your driving course. There are a couple of reasons why that might have happened, and understanding those reasons can tell you whether you want to keep your current company or look for a different one.

There may be a limit to how many discounts you can receive. Insurance companies set limits on all sorts of things, and the number of different discounts or the percentage of savings on your policy can have a limit. Once that is reached, you won't get any more discounts no matter what you do. Ask your insurance company if you'll be eligible for another discount before you take the defensive driving course in order to avoid this problem. If you've already taken the course and won't get a discount, you may want to see if other insurance companies will offer you a better deal. Always make sure what you're really getting before you switch, though, so you don't end up with less coverage.

Another reason you may not receive a discount can have to do with where you took your defensive driving course. Some companies may not be recognized or approved by your insurance company. If that's the case, you'll want to consider taking the course from a company your insurance company recognizes - but, again, make sure you're eligible for more discounts before you do this. Also, consider the cost of the course versus how much you'll save. The discount may not be worth it in the long run. Because all insurance companies are different, though, it may be worthwhile to check around and see what other offers of coverage you can get.
